Memories I don’t want to Forget

Ever had a song narrate a moment in your life? I have. My mom exposed me to several genres. Amongst her most played cassette tapes were: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Marley, Louie Armstrong, Ricardo Arjona, and Fito Paez. Fito Paez is an Argentine artist and my mom was and still is definitely his fan.

One song in particular that Fito sang played in my head on the day I was introduced to change. I had just turned 6 a month before I met change.  The lyrics to this particular song played in my mind, on the car ride to the airport.

It played in my head as my Nona and I promised each other not to cry in the Buenos Aires airport lobby as we checked in our luggage. And it played in my head as the American Airline flight attendant pined wings on the chest pocket of my t-shirt.

I couldn’t remember all of the lyrics to the song even though my mom played this song many times, but the following lyrics, the lyrics that played in my mind on and off throughout that day were this:

Even now as I translate, I give way to tears the same way the 6-year-old version of me did during take-off. I didn’t keep my promise. It amazes me how songs transcend emotion in such a powerful way. I doubt 6-year-old me had the ability to understand the magnitude of what was happening but somehow, I was able to connect change to the lyrics in this song.

Words alone are powerful, but when composed with a melody, they evoke emotions in us that at times we can’t articulate. Things we can’t say, but we know how to feel. What songs have narrated a piece of your story?

Great article! This is so true. It’s always amazes me how songs can take you back to a moment in time and evoke deep emotions. One song that does that for me is Summertime by Will Smith. It makes me feel like I’m 7 years old again at the annual family reunion cookouts we used to have each year running around with my cousins. Good times!

Somehow I can picture a little Lucas running around with baggy clothes and a gold chain with cousins on a nice summer day with the scent of BBQ in the air.

  2. Pauline says:

This is so true. There are many songs that bring me back to a certain moment . Whenever I hear John Mayer’s “Daughters” it makes me think of my Dad and the father daughter dance we never got to enjoy. Sometimes it’s sad, but other times it is a happy reminder of someone who meant so much. Music has such a powerful effect!

    • Alejandra Pereyra says:

That is so beautiful Pauline. I can’t wait to see you dance it with him on your 100th wedding anniversary in Paradise. Who knows, maybe John Mayer himself will be there singing it for the two of you.
